FIRED FOR SELF-DEFENSE

ut_wal

Walmart fired several employees including the store manager for disarming an armed man who they were questioning for suspected shoplifting. The Utah Supreme Court is now considering the arguments of the attorneys for both sides of the victim’s un-lawful termination case.

Despite what happens in the movies, no one will consider you a hero if you act to defend yourself from an attack. It is more likely that your co-workers will shun you, your employers terminate you, your neighbors avoid you because now you are “that person”.

Part of our training is to equip you to be able to avoid the situation in the first place. But if I had to choose between getting shot and getting fired from my job for avoiding it, I won’t choose getting shot!

HUMAN PREDATORS

Every day we go about our personal business. Whether at work, shopping, or leisure activities we are thinking about the task at hand, focused on the best way to get it done, or merely enjoying ourselves. At the same time we remain aware of our surroundings, avoiding the stupid people in stupid places doing stupid things. Why? Because there is a small subset of people out there with a mindset that is completely foreign to us. Follow the link to read the article from Tim of Gun Nuts Media to get a better understanding of the predatory mindset. It’s because these people exist, is why we remain vigilant. USE OF FORCE

In our courses we talk about the topic of Use of Force and it’s appropriate application. It is a complex subject that deserves our time during class and beyond to gain a better understanding of the subject. The perception by many is that this topic applies primarily to police officers. While it’s true that they have official policies that guide their use of force (often called the Use of Force Continuum) it is also applicable to the rest of us.

I believe it’s important for us to take the time to better understand it. Aaron Cowan recently posted a thorough explanation. I recommend you take the time to Click and Read: Everyman use of force: grey and not so grey areas.
