CARRY WITH A ROUND IN THE CHAMBER

1911chamber

There are a number of good reasons to carry with a round in the chamber. You may not have use of your other hand to rack the slide. The gun may suffer a stoppage due to poor mechanics induced under stress. The attacker may be too close to be able to draw, rack, and fire before you are shot/stabbed/punched/beaten.

It is relatively safe if you have a good quality holster that protects the trigger. The gun will not auto-magically fire, the trigger must be pressed for it to go bang.

Remember Rule Number One: The gun is always loaded. If you treat it that way at all times, you will be safe and you will be prepared if you are attacked and have to draw and fire rapidly. Your gun is nothing but an expensive club without it.

If you’re still not sure whether this is a good idea, take the time to hear what Mr. Colion Noir has to say on the subject.

When you’re ready, carry hot!

HIGHWAY ROBBERY

As has been the case with carjacking, robbery on the roadside is becoming a more common occurrence. As the victim is enticed to stop to assist a stranded motorist, they or a partner robs the Good Samaritan and takes their possessions or vehicle.

I recommend you call 911 if you see a stranded motorist and let the dispatcher know the freeway number, the direction the stranded motorist is on, and the approximate mile marker where they are located. Someone from law enforcement will be along shortly to assist them. Click to Read: Palmetto man robbed after being conned by I-75 rescue ruse.

TO SHOOT, OR NOT TO SHOOT. THAT IS THE QUESTION

So you just brought home a new Mac laptop from the computer store and later that evening head off to bed. A little later you hear noises in the house so you grab your gun and head out to see what’s going on. Now, I wouldn’t recommend that, I’d stay in my safe room / bed room, arm myself and call 911.

Let’s say in this instance you’re concerned about your family member in another bedroom to you go out to make sure they are safe. While doing so you see somebody running out the door with your laptop so you chase after them and shoot them in the backside. While this may seem like something desirable (I’m gonna git that SOB for stealin’ my stuff!!) I would contend that it really isn’t.

In Oklahoma you might just be just fine with no charges filed, Click to Read: El Reno woman says she shot would-be home intruder in backside.

shot-back

Here in Minnesota that would be a bad choice. Once outside your house you can no longer claim Defense of Dwelling as a reason to shoot this person, nor can you claim Self Defense since they are running away. That means you’d be facing a murder charge and hefty legal bills for money spent on representation. That doesn’t seem like a very attractive option to me.

On the other hand we could just let them run away. Yeah, it stinks that the bad guy just got away with your new cool laptop, but you won’t be going to jail tonight. Eventually, law enforcement will catch up with them and put them in jail. In addition, most of us have renters/home-owners insurance with a $500-$1000 deductible. In contrast to going to prison that seems a small price to pay. You can always buy another laptop.

If a family member is in danger, by all means go to them. Don’t let the home invader leave with them! Using the appropriate methods to get to the room they are in is critical because now the home invader has the tactical advantage as you are moving through the house. We will cover that in another blog post 🙂
