WHATS IN THE NEWS
THE ASSAULT WEAPON MYTH
The New York Times published an OP-ED that admits that the attempt to ban assault weapons is wrong. The article also admits that the left has focused on a politically defined definition of an assault weapon – a selection of guns with “military features”. This focus has led to numerous failures to enact further gun control.
While the anti-gun crowd has focused on banning assault weapons, they have neglected the real issues that are causing gun violence. The author cites a study that highlights the necessity of first reducing poverty and drug use, then couple that with a focus on the people that instigate the violent behavior. Coach, encourage, lead them away from violent lifestyles and toward being productive members of society. Social and cultural change will make the difference, not further gun control. If we make the effort to intervene, to change the culture that is feeding this type of behavior, it will make a big difference and help reduce gun crime.
In the mean time, don’t expect the anti-gun proponents to curtail their efforts to have all guns banned. The author points out that handguns cause the vast majority of gun deaths. I expect their assault on our civil rights will continue. They will merely alter their tactics as they have in the past. If the article is any indication, they will shift the focus to handguns. I doubt this effort will make their arguments seem any less ridiculous. Click to Read the article: The Assault Weapon Myth.
WHEN CITIZENS FIGHT BACK
There is a significant difference between the mindset of a police officer, versus a soldier, versus an armed citizen. A soldier is trained for combat, fighting enemy soldiers or insurgents. Their engagements can be close or at long distances, with intent to attack and disable or kill the enemy. In law enforcement, the officer is trained to intervene in conflicts and pursue the Violent Criminal Actors (VCAs) with the intent to apprehend and detain them. As an Armed Citizen, it is our intention to avoid VCAs and to act decisively to end the threat when there is no alternative.
The bottom line is that Military and Law Enforcement tactics are primarily offensive while Armed Citizens tactics are primarily defensive.
In our courses we spend a significant amount of time on this mindset and the tactics employed to achieve our goal of minimizing risk to ourselves and our loved ones. As we build upon the foundation of correct gun-handling skills our courses advance to cover scenarios based upon the more typical encounters that people have experienced in the past.
It the following article a gentleman that I and many others consider an expert in the field, discusses these real-world encounters. Tom Givens explains quite well – the mindset and tactics necessary to fight back when there is no alternative. Click to Read: When Citizens Fight Back.
JIHAD IN AMERICA
There have been a number of stories in the media about people that either volunteer or are recruited to join the jihadists in Syria and elsewhere that are part of al-Qaeda or ISIS. It is more disturbing when we realize there are American citizens who are training here in the U.S. and have begun to act upon their desire to perpetrate jihad here in our country.
The pictures above are the face of radicalized Islam in America. Will you be prepared if you come face to face with one of their comrades-in-arms? Click to Read: Suspect says he murdered New Jersey teen as revenge for U.S. military killings in Middle East: police.
