WINNING THE FIGHT!

THE FOUR D’s

Divide the attacker’s focus, Disrupt their plan, Disable their body, and Destroy their will to fight (if it gets that far!).

Last Monday we discussed disengagement as one of the four ways to deter harm. Disengagement routines incorporate rehearsed verbalizations, moving off of the line of attack, and using a less than lethal force option if necessary and possible, such as O.C. pepper spray. Successful disengagement can usually be accomplished via posture and firm verbalizations, but you must be practiced and have your “tape-loops” ready to go! Statistically the one who initiates first is the one who wins the fight. Dithering is Defeat! Quick Action Wins.

Divide their focus. For example, if you’re being approached by a stranger asking for money, your immediate goal is to verbally and physically divide the intruder’s focus. You can then disengage by verbalizing something like, “Sorry sir, I can’t help you,” as you keep moving away. If they continues to press the issue, you might yell, “Get away from me!” or “Get Back!”. No matter what they ask for or say, your answer should always be the same, “Sorry sir, I can’t help you”. Your verbalizations should be rehearsed to the point where you can run them off like tape loops when they are triggered by danger.

Disrupt their plan. You disrupt the assailant’s plan by moving and being unpredictable. Whatever you do, don’t freeze! If the stranger attacks you, you believe that your life and limb are in jeopardy, and you have no other options for avoiding imminent death or grave bodily harm, you may have to employ your final option and draw your gun. Use the Interview Stance, verbalize confidently, “Don’t move. Drop your weapon!”

Disable their body. If the former does not deter the attacker, you may have to shoot to stop the attack in order to avoid becoming another victim. We teach the “zipper” method. The objective is to turn off the attacker and stop the aggression as quickly as possible. This usually means inflicting lethal shots—shooting at the naval and then shooting up the attacker’s midline, like a zipper, until the attacker stops coming at you.

Destroy their will. Until someone is shot, it is likely that they didn’t even notice that you have a gun pointed at them, or they have had guns pointed at them before and don’t feel it’s a big deal. Once they are hit they will likely decide being shot is un-desirable and will break off the attack to run away. On rare occasion, having watched too much T.V., they may collapse in place. In any case, you will fire 3-4 shots, move and assess the situation, and if they have not stopped, resume firing four more shots. Lather-Rinse-Repeat as necessary until the threat has ended.

In the following video this jewelry store owner takes quick action and is able to prevent the robbery and destroy their will to fight. He divided their focus and disrupted their plan by first knocking the gun away then running to his own gun. He disabled their body by shooting, and destroyed their will to fight causing them to run away. When they run away, let them! The fight is over. Let Law Enforcement go after any that have run away.

HOME INVASION

HomeInv

This is a story where a man was shot in his own home in front of his family. He may have fared better had he been armed. To be able to destroy the will of armed attackers, a gun will be the only thing that will enable you to win the fight.  Click to Watch: Police: Man shot in front of family during home invasion.
